Quality Engineer

New Hudson, MI
Full Time
Quality
Mid Level

Build quality into custom molded parts and engineered systems.
Exotic Automation makes custom rubber, urethane, and plastic components to exact customer specifications. In-house we do compression and injection molding, CNC machining, and our own mold making. We also design and build engineered systems, including custom hydraulic power units and manifold assemblies. Our parts serve aerospace, defense, automotive, medical, and industrial customers.

As our Quality Engineer, you will be the quality lead on the shop floor in an AS9100 and ISO 9001:2015 certified, ITAR compliant operation, making sure every part and system we ship meets spec.
What You Will Do

  • Verify what we make. Perform receiving, in-process, and final inspections on molded rubber, urethane, and plastic parts, machined components, and engineered systems. Interpret drawings and GD&T, and run dimensional layouts with precision measuring equipment.
  • Program and run the CMM. Validate critical dimensions on molded, machined, and assembled products.
  • Launch new parts right. Lead AS9102 First Article Inspections and AIAG PPAP submissions for new molds, prototypes, steel-to-plastic conversions, and custom builds.
  • Solve problems at the root. Lead 8D and other structured root cause investigations into molding, machining, and assembly defects. Support the Material Review Board (MRB) process.
  • Strengthen the QMS. Help maintain our AS9100 and ISO 9001 certifications through internal audits, corrective actions, and current control plans, work instructions, inspection plans, and procedures.
  • Partner with suppliers. Drive supplier corrective actions and review qualification and material certifications for elastomers, resins, and purchased components.
  • Own metrology. Manage the calibration program in GageTrak or a similar system, and run MSA and Gage R&R studies.
  • Turn data into improvement. Analyze quality metrics to cut scrap and rework, improve first-pass yield, and raise throughput across manufacturing.

What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of Quality Engineering or Quality Assurance experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with rubber, urethane, or plastic molding, or CNC machining, is a strong plus.
  • Strong ability to read complex engineering drawings with GD&T.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 and AS9100. Aerospace/defense manufacturing experience is a strong plus.
  • Hands-on CMM programming and precision inspection experience.
  • Experience with FAI (AS9102), PPAP, 8D, MRB, MSA, and Gage R&R.
  • Calibration program experience. GageTrak is a plus.
  • Confidence leading cross-functional problem solving and communicating with customers, suppliers, and leadership.
Why Exotic Automation
  • Variety. You’ll work on precision molded parts, machined components, and custom systems, not a single production line.
  • Impact. Your work goes into aerospace, defense, medical, and industrial applications.
  • Stability. Exotic is part of the Value Added Companies family.
  • Comprehensive Benefits Package.  Exotic offers full benefits and PTO.
